May is NATIONAL PET MONTH. A opportunity to celebrate the critters in our lives that bring us so much joy. Whether your team cat or team dog, into reptiles or aquatic creatures, consider your BFF to be a goat, or just a lover of animals in general we all can agree that our pet's make our lives better. It's estimated that over 80 million families in the US have at least one pet in the home. It's also a time to promote responsible pet ownership. Our animal companions ask for very little, but it is our duty to keep them safe, healthy, and up-to-date on vaccines and prevention. So this month take the opportunity to schedule your Wellness Appointments, take an extra long walk with your dog, share all the adorable pet photos, and feel free to watch all the funny cat videos. If you're feeling left out of the "Pet Owner's Club" and ready to take a leap that will change your life, consider adopting a furry family member from HSCC. All of our animals are up-to-date on vaccines and testing, spayed or neutered, microchipped, and ready to start a new journey with a beautiful family. Click the link below for more info on adopting a pet from HSCC. | | | | YOU'RE INVITED TO A KITTEN SHOWER Saturday, May 4th | 12-2 p.m. | Rescue Re-Tail (downtown Newton) | | | As we are preparing for Kitten Season we encourage those who attend to bring an item or two from our Wish List (linked below). We will provide light refreshments and host a discussion on fostering for our shelter. Consider this: - A single unaltered female cat can produce three litters per year with an average of 4-6 kittens per litter.
- A single unaltered female cat and her offspring can produce more than 400,000 cats in there lifetime.
This time of the year is very challenging for shelters. Any help is greatly appreciated! | | | | SPRING BARK FESTIVAL Saturday, May 11th | Fairbrook Optimist Park | 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. | | | This family and dog-friendly event will feature a full day of doggie fun! Kona, a 6 year old, Treeing Walker Coon Hound and Morris aka "Red", a 3 year old, Coonhound successfully completed a 12 week program that allows state offenders to train shelter dogs in preparation for their adoption. The dogs are taught basic obedience, house training, and socialization by the offenders with guidance from the shelter staff. Both Kona and Morris were from a hoarding situation. By having this socialization and obedience work their progress over the 12 week training course was immense. On return to HSCC, Kona has been adopted into his forever home. Morris is still waiting, but we know that perfect candidate is out there! If you would be interested in adopted Morris or any animal at HSCC, please contact Kaitlyn Ewing at kaitlyn@catawbahumane.org. | | | VETSOURCE HSCC Online Pharmacy | | | We are working with our pharmacy partner, Vetsource, to deliver the products your pet needs to your front door. Concerned citizens contacted HSCC, and she was brought to the shelter, tail wagging all the way. Although her photo was posted, no owner ever came to the shelter. She was given all her vaccines and spayed. Gracie’s story had a happy ending, and she was adopted into a loving family. We’ll never know why she was lost or abandoned. Could her family not afford to care for her? Was the cost of spay surgery out of reach? With such a sweet disposition, we know someone must have loved her. Gracie wants to be sure that every owner can afford to have their animal spayed or neutered. To this end, HSCC is happy to offer The Gracie Project: No-cost spay/neuter for dogs of low-income owners that qualify. Dog owners who receive government benefits such as Food stamps (EBT), Medicaid, or SSI payments can now receive spay/neuter surgery for their dogs at no cost. For more information, or to make an appointment, please call 828.464.8878. Appointment dates and times are limited. | | | WILDFLOWER'S WISH HAS COME TRUE!
