Congratulations to our recent graduate, Tonto!

Earlier this year, Humane Society of Catawba County partnered with Foothills Correctional Institution, Morganton, NC with the "New Lease on Life” program. This is a national program allowing state offenders to train shelter dogs in preparation for their adoption. The selected dogs are placed in a one-on-one situation with an offender in a prison setting. This is a minimum twelve week program for as much as ten hours a day. The offenders teach basic obedience, house training and socialization with guidance from shelter staff.
Two shelter dogs, Billy Bob and Tonto, were the first to participate in the program. “Both these dogs have been at the shelter for a considerable length of time” explained, HSCC Executive Director, Jane Bowers, “and the staff felt both were ideal candidates”. Unfortunately, due to a medical issue Billy Bob had to be withdrawn from the program after 8 weeks, but has since been adopted directly from the shelter.
Recently, Tonto graduated with an excellent report card and although all at the prison will be sad to see him depart, two new candidates will soon embark on their new journey. If you are interested in adopting Tonto or finding out more about the program, please email Kaitlyn Ewing at

Help us feed pets from low-income families in our area.

The HSCC Pet Food Pantry currently feeds around 800+ animals from low-income families in this community. By providing supplemental food to these pets we can help them stay in a loving home. As pet owners are aware, providing food for our furry friends can be very expensive. To help keep the Pet Food Pantry stocked we will continue our Pet Food Drive into 2024. You can bring donations of wet/dry, dog/cat, kitten/puppy food by HSCC or Rescue Re-Tail during business hours. If you donate at Rescue Re-Tail you will receive a 15% discount off any store purchase you make the day you donate.
